Utilities like electricity boards are moving towards
a licencee system for industrial parks, residential
flats etc. In this case, the licencee is billed in bulk
by the utility for the energy supplied, who in turn
collects electricity charges from the individual clients.
In the Networked Pre-paid Energy Metering System developed
for such a licencee system, special pre-paid meters
are installed in client sites and networked through
an RS-485 interface to a PC at the central control room
of the licencee who can address each of the meters through
the RS-485 network to charge it with pre-payment details,
based on the amount paid in advance by the client user.
At other times, network can be gainfully used by the
licencee to monitor the energy usage pattern by each
of the clients as part of an over all energy management
initiative. There will also be option for a client to
monitor his power consumption, pre-payment status etc
through a PC.
